ChiYoWo Celebrates International Women’s Day, 2021

Sunday, 28 March 2021 by access_admin

ChiYoWo celebrated International Women’s Day (IWD) with the utmost respect for the barriers and challenges women have overcome to date. IWD sees a number of missions to help forge a gender-equal world. Celebrating women’s achievements and increasing visibility, while calling out inequality, is key.

According to the IWD, a challenged world is an alert world and from challenge comes change.

So let’s all choose to challenge. That is exactly what we did. As a Team, we will continue to raise awareness against bias and take action for equality. And to our Team, thanks for all you do and continue to do.

Happy IWD!

Sunday, 28 March 2021 by access_admin

ChiYoWo is excited! According to the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, “we must do far more to advance Sustainable Development Goal 4, to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.”

Recover and revitalize education for the COVID-19 generation

The International Education Day occurs in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic that led to a global learning disruption of unprecedented scale and severity. The closure of schools, universities, and other learning institutions, as well as the interruption of many literacy and lifelong learning programmes, has affected the lives of 1.6 billion students in over 190 countries. As a new year begins, now is the time to step up collaboration and international solidarity to place education and lifelong learning at the center of the recovery and the transformation towards more inclusive, safe, and sustainable societies.

Handwashing Awareness to Prevent the Spread of COVID -19 in 2021

Sunday, 28 March 2021 by access_admin

ChiYoWo continues to advocate the need to prevent the spread of the COVID -19 virus.

According to Water Aid, frequent, thorough handwashing with soap and water is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of infectious diseases and is the first line of defence against COVID-19. Like a cold, coronaviruses are spread through droplets from a person coughing or sneezing, and via contaminated surfaces. Good hygiene is key to avoiding spreading it – and catching it.

Let us continue to stay safe!

ChiYoWo Proudly Celebrates World NGO Day 2021

Sunday, 28 March 2021 by access_admin

ChiYoWo, is proud to have partnered with numerous NGOs and UN bodies over the years to ensure that it continues to remain a voice for the voiceless. To that, we remain entirely grateful.

History of the World NGO Day

According to Days of the Year, World NGO Day aims to inspire people to become more actively involved within NGOs (Charities, NPOs, CSOs) and encourage a greater symbiosis between NGOs and both the public and private sector. The universal concept of World NGO Day is to Celebrate, Commemorate and Collaborate with the various NGOs around the world, and the people behind them on 27th February every year.

World NGO Day is a day for NGOs around the globe to share knowledge and experiences with one another. It aims to educate individuals worldwide on NGOs and their impact. The World NGO Day provides an opportunity to honour and remember NGO founders, employees, volunteers, members, and supporters.

Let us keep working towards a common goal!

ChiYoWo goes to Makoko, donates books to CEE-HOPE and advocates to ‘End Violence’ in Lagos State, Nigeria

Sunday, 28 March 2021 by access_admin
ChiYoWo donated educational, reading, and storybooks to the Centre for Children’s Health Education, Orientation and Protection (CEE-HOPE).

ChiYoWo’s Initiative representatives, Onyeka Titigbe and Lameed Opeyemi, sensitized the children, both boys, and girls, on the need to adopt a good reading culture as it helps to widen their knowledge base and provides them with a heightened sense of self-awareness about their rights. This also includes the confidence to report and prevent potential child abuse at any given time.

Betty Abah, CEE-HOPE’s founder, expressed gratitude for enriching children’s and youths’ lives and described ChiYoWo’s gesture as life-enhancing.

The sensitization talks on sexual violence prevention to these teenagers were simply priceless considering the high incidences of sexual violence especially against young persons that we face in the course of the COVID -19 Pandemic.

Also, as part of activities marking the recent 16 Days of Activism to End Gender-Based Violence, CEE-HOPE partnered with ChiYoWo and Jabez Place to sensitize children at Makoko in Lagos, Nigeria’s biggest slum settlement where over 60 children drawn from Makoko and other places across Lagos were actively engaged and empowered.

Jabez Place led by Adesola Alamutu, a gender rights activist and founder of Children and the Environment (CATE), and Iquo Diana-Abasi, a poet and writer, enlightened the children on how to stay safe and avoid being sexually violated, stressing that the COVID-19 period had led to increased rates of rape and other forms of sexual violence. Also in attendance and giving similar advice was Yemi Oni, Head, Legal Services, Lagos State Ministry of Justice.

They encouraged the children to be alert, self-aware, and confident and to report attempted violations to their teachers and other authority figures around them.

Special thanks go out to the Nigerian Schools Foundation (UK) for their continued support to ChiYoWo.

ChiYoWo Celebrates the International Day of the Girl Child 2020 at Dadeyo High School and Tony Bee School, Lagos

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE GIRL CHILD 2020

Theme: My Voice, Our Equal Future
The International Day of the Girl Child is an annual event held globally every October 11th to celebrate the life and struggles of the Girl Child and to bring about a positive change in the mindsets of people around the world about the Girl Child.
The Girl Child has for so many decades been overlooked in the spectrum of society. In some homes and cultures, they are not allowed to reach the same educational levels as their male counterparts. A lot of people wrongly believe that girls are probably not as intelligent or mentally/physically strong as their male counterparts, leading to all forms of discrimination against the female gender in the workplace, socio-political space, educational sector, and the general society at large. This line of thought needs to change.
So many successful women today like Folorunso Alakija, Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, Mo Abudu, Helen Johnson Sirleaf, Hilary Clinton, Yemi Alade, Serena Williams amongst others have shown that if given the chance, the Girl Child can successfully reach the zenith of her career and industry as well as to attain the highest level of education possible, hence the importance of celebrating the International Day of the Girl Child is to raise awareness of the opportunities made available to the Girl Child.
This year 2020, the Children Youth and Women Empowerment Initiative, ChiYoWo joined the rest of the world to mark this important day (themed My Voice Our Equal future) by holding a Girl-Child talk session on the 12th of October 2020 with female students of two schools, Dadeyo High School, Abule Egba and TonyBee Nursery& Primary School, Alagbado, both in Lagos, Nigeria.
The focus of the message passed was to:
* Campaign against gender-based bias and violence
* Encourage parents/guardians to allow the girl child to attain the highest level of education
* Encourage the girl child to acquire skills towards the futures they choose
* Encourage young girls to Lead as a generation of activists accelerating social change
After the talk session, some of the girls gave a one-minute interview and they shared their ambitions, reflected on their lives as girls, and talked about how the Girl Child should be taken care of at all times.
ChiYoWo also held a one-week Instagram campaign #ChiYoWoGirlsRock which started from 12th October to 18th October 2020 to raise awareness about the life and importance of the Girl Child. People were asked to make 20 seconds video of themselves talking positively about the girl child and sending a word of encouragement to every girl in the world. The videos were posted each day from the 15th of October to the 18th of October on the official Instagram handle of the ChiYoWo Empowerment Initiative, @chiyowoini.
